Lead Minister & Praise/Worship Leader:    Travis and Dena Hurley

Travis and Dena Hurley are beginning their nineth year of ministry at FCC. Baptized into Christ in 1984 and then ordained for ministry in 1995, Travis serves as Lead Minister and believes that Jesus' prayer for unity in John 17 has practical implications for the "melting pot" that comprises the church in America. Travis completed his undergraduate work at Ozark Christian College in Joplin, MO, and is now in the midst of graduate studies in urban and cross-cultural ministry through Cincinnati Christian University.

Dena Hurley serves as the praise and worship leader at FCC, and she is the Business Manager of the Tree of Life Development Center at FCC. Baptized into Christ in 1991, Dena met and married Travis while attending Ozark Christian College in Joplin, MO, and she is completing her undergraduate work at Carolina Christian College in Winston-Salem, NC.

While they love full-time ministry, Travis and Dena recognize that it is only part of their calling in Christ. Their callings start at home where they have enjoyed sixteen wonderful years of marriage, and together they are raising (and homeschooling) their four children: Andrea, Nathan, Rebecca and Caleb. Travis and Dena also feel a special calling to minister to vulnerable children, and so they partner with the Christian pregnancy and adoption centers in their community while also opening their home to foster children throughout the year.

Associate Minister & Trustee:    Don and Shelley Battle

Don and his wife, Shelley have been members of First Christian Church since April 2006. Their joy in service to the Lord, both at First Christian Church and in their previous church affiliations, is in the music ministry primarily for Shelley and preaching/teaching ministries for Don.  

Here at FCC, Don was blessed to be ordained as an Associate Minister in March 2008. He began his walk in the Lord on Easter Sunday 1958 when he was baptized. Don's spiritual background and service has been exclusively in Baptist churches prior to uniting with FCC. In that walk as a servant of God through Christ, Don has served as an Adult Sunday School teacher for 25+ years and a Licensed Baptist Minister for 15 years. Don believes his spiritual gifts to be teaching and preaching. His academic background includes attendance at Western Michigan University, Prince George’s Community College and local seminary classes within various Baptist churches. Shelley was baptized as a baby but in 1982 was baptized as an adult. Since then, she has served in various capacities such as the Newsletter, Bulletin, Youth and Sunday School ministries. Her academic background includes graduation from the University of Massachusetts.

They have been married for almost  30 years and live in Mitchellville, MD with their beloved dog, Happi. Don and Shelley are joyously blessed to walk with the Lord at FCC.

Music Minister:    Allyn Lloyd-Powell

Allyn was born July 14, 1953 in East Meadow, NY. She graduated from Mineola HS in 1971 and graduated Yale University with a B.S. in Biology in 1975. She went on to graduate from Howard University College of Medicine in Washington, DC in 1979. She completed her Pediatric Residency Training Program at Howard University and D.C. General Hospital in 1981.

On April 11, 1981, Allyn married Darryl Powell. She gave her life to Christ in July 1983. Allyn and Darryl have two daughters, Niambi Celeste, born October 3, 1982 and Michelle Shana Oshiro, born October 22, 1985. Allyn practiced pediatric medicine for 20 years before deciding to follow God's calling to teach music. She is currently teaching music at several Christian schools and giving private lessons through her Joyful  Noise School of Music.

Elder & Trustee:    David Boggs

David and his wife, Peggy, have attended First Christian Church all of their lives. Both were baptized in their teens. They were married in the church at Capital Heights in 1961. They live in Davidsonville, Maryland. Their daughter, Hunter, was born in 1976. She is married to Chris, an officer in the Marine Corps and they currently live in Deale, Maryland.

 

David attended the University of  Maryland and Anne Arundel Community College. He has worked for Lyon Conklin Co. Inc since 1964, when he returned from military service.

 

David and Peggy have always been actively involved in the church. David currently serves as Elder, Trustee and Sunday School teacher and has served as Youth Group Leader, Small Group Leader, Chairman of the Building Committee and in many other areas as needed.

         

Elder & Trustee:    Godfrey Lewis

Elder Godfrey Lewis and his wife Sheryl, have been members at First Christian Church since 2004 where each has served in various capacities such as Sunday School and Children’s Church teacher, Deacon and Trustee. Godfrey is from Guyana, South America and Sheryl is from Jamaica. They have two children and live in Maryland.

Deacon:    Victor Johnson

Deacon Victor Johnson has been a member at First Christian Church since November 2006 where he serves as Deacon. Victor is from Nigeria. He has three children - Joseph, Joshua and Eugenia. They currently reside in Upper Marlboro, MD.

Trustee & Treasurer:    Sylvia Eason

 

Sylvia Eason  has been a member at First Christian Church since 1999 where she serves as Treasurer and Trustee. She is from New Orleans, LA. Sylvia and her husband have grown children and reside in Upper Marlboro, MD.
